Default A few nooby questions...

Hey, I'm pretty new to the game, just picked up the regular game + EoTN pack a few weeks ago, had a few questions.

First, I'm hearing that 40/40 sets are highly recommended for caster classes. I was wondering, I'm able to find the 20/20 offhands no problem off collectors, but looking at guild wars wiki I can't seem to find any wands off collectors or weapon makers. Where can I find good 20/20 wands?

Second, I know that you can unlock skills and items from balthazar's priests, but I'm not quite sure how to acquire the items or skills after I unlocked them, how would I go about doing that?

Third, Since my main character is a mesmer, I imagine it'd be best if I got a different character for farming gold. Any suggestions for really good farming professions and strategies? (maybe a link to a good forum thread would be good here, I couldn't find a really concrete answer when I checked myself)

And Lastly, I know that guild wars 2 is coming out sometime soon, and I'm wondering whether people think it would be worth it to go ahead and buy nightfall and/or factions. Like do we have an idea how soon it will be?

Thanks for any help in advance

1. You can buy them from players, but they would be pretty expensive for a new player. There should be collectors, but I'm not really sure.
2. Items and skills are unlocked for PvP only characters. Unlocked skills can be bought from a skill trainer, or you can buy some tomes and use those.
3. Your best bet would probably either be a monk or a necro.
4. It is supposed to be quite awhile before GW2, and they just released a box set where you can get all 3 games and the expansion for a very good price, so I would say yes.

A lot of people have trouble with this - however, in EotN, there are weapons crafters who can made them for you.

You will need to buy them from the appropriate skill trainer. GuildWarsWiki will help you with that.

Considering that you have Prophecies, I'd look at a Monk for the 55 build. Check the farming forum in the Campfire however.

No announced released date. Seeing as you just started, there's a lot to do. Consider that.

http://www.guildwars.com/products/platinum/default.php

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild...ete_Collection (oh don't go saying "oh that's just wiki", I did a search on the real GW website and this was the first hit)

The OP probably has the Platinum edition because the Complete Collection hasn't come out yet. But still, it exists.

The 40/40 caster set includes:

A wand/rod with an "Aptitude not Attitude" inscription and a memory mod.

The "Apt not Att" carries a Halves Casting Time(HCT) bonus with a 20% chance.
The memory mod carries a Halve Skill Recharge(HSR) bonus with a 20% chance

The offhand has an aptitude mod and a "Forget me Not" inscription.

The "Forget me Not" inscription gives a HSR bonus with a 20% chance.
The Attitude mod gives a HCT bonus with a 20% chance.

These two together gives you a 40% chance of getting the bonus on any spell cast and a 40% chance or the recharge bonus. The attitude and the memory mods are pretty cheap 1-3K each. The inscriptions go from 5K-10K for the A not A and 20-30K for the Forget me Not. It is possible to find them for less in game. I have paid as little as 1K for a Forget Me Not and 4K for an A not A.

A lot of people prefer a Fortitude mod on the offhand or both which gives you +30 Health, or +60. I like the 40/40 combo but I have a variety of combinations, which I load into my 4 weapon slots so I can swith off. As you play the game more, you will get more sophisticated in your weapons choices. Guru has a wealth of info on this.

Inspite of the hype, GW2 will be a while before it is released. I've been playing for 3 years and I am still doing new things. There is a lot there and every area gives your characters new weapons and skills to get better. Try buying on E-bay where you can get Cantha and Nightfall cheaply. I suggest buying new, unopened, versions, although you only need the valid serial #'s because everything is downloadable.

Unlocking things from the Balth. priest is mostly for PVP. However, you can unlock skills for your heroes, also, from the priest. If you wish to use them on your main character you need a tome to unlock them for your character. At first, skills are pretty cheap from the skill trainer, but, as you accumulate them the price goes up until it caps out at 1K. At that point, since skills cost 1K and 1 skill point, and, regular tomes cost 300g-500g, it's cheaper to buy tomes and use them to unlock the skills for your character.

As far as farming, you can use any character. Check the farming posts in the forums for info on builds, etc. I've done a lot of farming. At first, when you don't know much, just pick everything up and sell it to the merchant, rune trader, or material trader. If you start to farm, make sure you learn what the going price is for an item. If you are broke and get a perfect "Forget me Not" inscription, you can gain cash quickly. Make sure you understand the mechanics of salvaging valuable mods, etc from worthless weapons.

There is so much to learn and so little time.

Personally, I don't bother with a 40/40 set. I much prefer additional health points and energy. My mesmer does her farming with a spear and a shield.

The 40/40 is just the latest "you have to use it or you are a noob" thing. While there are benefits, it's nothing great.

@Raku - great post

Thanks for the posts guys!
I decided to try a 55 monk and I think I'll get the complete collection when it comes out in stores.

40/40 is not new at all. I have that on my Flame artifact and Dragon's Breath Wand.

Oh and cost how about FREE. Since you said that you want to farm anywho go to Boral's Starion (spelling not so good) it is the first place in GW:EN. Get MAX armor and go and Kill the SNOW WURMS.

Get your self a Speed Buff so that you can run fast. In Normal Mode just kill the 13 Snow Wurms. In Hard Mode Kill the 10 snow wurms and then map out to the station again.

Repeat this until you get enough Gold for a Lock Pick. Should be 3 runs in hard mode in less than 8 minutes or so. use the Lockpicks in HARD MODE. You will most likely break the lockpick but your shot at a Forget Me not 20% is greatly increased. If you get one it is 20-25K ish.

I have sold 3 Platinum Blades Req9 unmodded of around 15K each and I sold a perfect Dragon's Breath Wand 20/20 for 45K that I farmed. It was not perfect when I got it as a drop from the snow wurms but I was 3 seconds after I stopped yelling WOOT REQ9

That is a nice area to farm as well since you can not die and you get HUGE amounts of XP. So if you are going for SURVIVOR TITLE consider getting to lvl 10 then with the buff farm the XP in hard mode. 592 XP per kill in hard mode by yourself with a scroll. Not that bad for 3 minutes. That is 10,000 XP per hour + Fantastic drops and 0 chance of death
